There ain’t no bugs on me…

Remember that commercial with the cute little puppy?  I think it was for K9 Advantix…anyhow, it reminded me that it’s getting that time of year again.  Flea season.  Some of us never really have an “off” season, but typically we think about it more in the summer time.  Even if you keep your cat indoors, they can still get those nasty little buggers.  So, here’s some handy facts and tips to keep your kitty pest free all summer long.

  • Fleas are the most common external parasite on cats.  Bites can cause irritation or allergic reactions, such as crusty dermatitis on the face, neck, and back.
  • Fleas can transmit tapeworms.
  • In order to completely control fleas, you must treat the cat, house, and yard.
  • Shampoos and collars used to treat fleas typically have little residual effects and aren’t useful for long term control.
  • Only use products labeled safe to use on cats, as they are extremely sensitive to chemicals and insecticides.
  • Topical products like Advantage, Frontline, or Revolution are best for killing fleas and one application lasts up to one month.  (Personally, I use Revolution on my cats, as it protects them from fleas, heartworms, ear mites, roundworms, and hookworms.  I really feel like I’m getting the biggest bang for my buck.  However, it does require a prescription from a vetinarian.)
  • Orthoboric Acid Powder.  This can be sprinkled on carpets and near the baseboards of your home.  This works best if it’s reapplied every 6-9 months.
  • During the warmer months, treat your yard with an insecticide targeted towards fleas every 6-8 weeks.

Don’t forget to drop by and see what the other WoW kitties are up to this week!  Happy Whiskers on Wednesday!

I am deathly allergic to flea bites! Another reason to hate fleas!

I was just thinking about this the other day! I get complacent because my cats are indoors, but once in a blue moon they do like to venture out in the back yard. Thanks for the reminder! 🙂

Do you need to worry if your cat is a house cat? Hugs Darcy
